Jarrod David, who won a Special Election runoff for Place 3 on the VISD School Board, was sworn in during Monday's board meeting. January is also School Board Appreciation Month and trustees received several gifts from the district and campuses. We appreciate all of our trustees' dedication to help make the district the best it can be, and their commitment to helping the district ensure each student receives a quality education.
Current VISD School Board Trustees are Chris Lehman, Emory Byars, Patrick Parmer, Carrie Hawkins, Amanda Lehman, Jarrod David and Bryson Henry.
The VHS Culinary Arts students prepared the meal for Monday's VISD School Board meeting. Trustees enjoyed lasagna, salad, garlic bread, and mini cheesecakes. During the meeting, the students and teacher Mrs. Audrey Hastings were recognized and received certificates and a district coin. Serving the meal were Keinin Gardner, Jaycelynn Felman, Alyssa Garcia, Elizabeth Lagunas, Olivia Najera, Mylee Greening, Nathanel Sanchez and Rhyan Lee. Others who helped prepare the meal included Haydn Weddle, Eh Kpaw, Gabriel Romero, Isabella Mejia, Israel Espinoza, Kylee Lane, Marcus Gonzales, Melanie Serrato, and Taw Doh Htoo.
VISD Supt. Dr. Kermit Ward presented Vernon High School freshman Reagan Baskerville with a certificate and a district coin Monday evening, as she was recognized during the January school board meeting. Reagan was recognized for her performance of "Taps" at the VHS Veterans' Day Assembly in November. Reagan is a member of the Roarin' Lion Band.
Our VHS Cheerleaders will be leaving tomorrow for their state competition. There will be a sendoff in front of VHS at 10:30 a.m., with students, Roarin' Lion Band and Lionette Drill Team cheering them on. They will leave town at 2 p.m. Please join us in lining Wilbarger and show your support as they leave town. They will compete at the state competition Thursday morning.
Our Lions will hit the court tonight for a District 7-3A contest with the Jacksboro Tigers. Boys' action begins at 4:30 p.m., with the JV game in D.O. Fulton Gym. The freshmen team will play at approximately 6 p.m., in the PE Gym, with the Lions taking the court back at Fulton Gym at approximately 7:15 p.m. Good Luck Lions!!!
Our Lady Lions are currently in second place in District 7-3A and they begin the second round of district action at home tonight against the Jacksboro Tigerettes. The sub-varsity game will start at 4:30 p.m. in the PE Gym, with the varsity game to follow at approximately 6 p.m., in D.O. Fulton Gym. The Lady Lions are playing some good ball right now!! Come on out and cheer them on!! Good Luck Lady Lions!!!
As we start the first full week of our 2025 Spring Semester, here are a few reminders from our VISD District Nurse Jennifer Walker, RN, on our health protocols.
Our VHS cheerleaders are competing at their state competition this Thursday and they will be performing their state routine for the public tonight at D.O. Fulton Gym. The performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. Our cheerleaders do a great job supporting our athletic teams, and now it's time to support them.!! Head on out to the gym tonight and cheer them on as they prepare for their state competition.
Monday starts the 2nd week of our Vernon ISD Attendance Incentive for the 4th Six Weeks. Each week a student has perfect attendance they receive a ticket to put in a drawing for a MEGA QUEST 3 virtual reality headset. There will be a drawing for EACH GRADE!!
If a student has perfect attendance for the entire grading period, they will have 7 tickets for the drawing. If a student misses a day one week, they're not eliminated from the competition, they just won't earn a ticket for that week. They will start with a clean slate the next week.
Our 40th anniversary celebration honoring the 1985 Class 3A State Champion Lady Lions will begin with at 5 p.m., this evening with a public reception in the VHS Bandhall. At the conclusion of the Lady Lions' game, at approximately 7:15 p.m., a ceremony honoring team members will be held at D.O. Fulton Gym. Please make plans to attend and help us celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Vernon High School's first team state champion.
Our Lions will be hosting the Iowa Park Hawks in a District 7-3A battle tonight at D.O. Fulton Gym. Sub-varsity boys games will begin at 4:30 p.m. in the PE Gym. The Lions are 0-3 in district, while the Hawks are 1-2. The Lions should take the court at D.O. Fulton Gym at approximately 7:40 p.m.
Our Lady Lions will close out the first round of District 7-3A action at home tonight as they host the Iowa Park Lady Hawks. Vernon is 4-1 in district and currently in sole possession of 2nd place and just a game out of 1st place. Sub-varsity action will begin at 4:30 p.m., with the varsity game set to start around 6 p.m.
Vernon ISD is operating on a 2-hour delayed start today. Roads are wet, but not frozen. Buses will run 2 hours later than normal.
Just a quick reminder that Vernon ISD will be operating on a 2-hour delayed start on Friday.
KFDX and Ariel Reed did a great job on honoring our 1985 Lady Lions Class 3A State Championship team on the 40th anniversary of their championship. A public reception will be held tomorrow from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the VHS Bandhall, and members of the team will be recognized in a ceremony in Fulton Gym following the girls' varsity game at approximately 7:15 p.m. As of 10 a.m., today, everything is still scheduled to be held.

Vernon ISD officials have decided to close school today as weather conditions have deteriorated . We will also have a 2-hour delayed started on Friday.
Vernon ISD will be operating on a 2-hour delay start today due to the weather. We will continue to monitor the radar and weather conditions.
UPDATE -- Due to the weather models constantly changing, our VISD Administration team believes there is currently not enough concrete information to make a decision on whether or not have school on Thursday. Officials also believe there will not be enough information to make that decision tonight. District officials will make a decision early Thursday morning on whether we will have a regular school day, a late start, or close for the day. District officials will be up early and checking roads if necessary. As soon as a decision is made, we will announce it on our Facebook pages, through texts and we will let the TV stations know.
Our Lions will be traveling to Bowie tonight for a District 7-3A battle with the Jackrabbits. Both teams are still searching for their first district wins of the season and both teams are coming off tough OT losses. Vernon fell to Henrietta in 2OT last Friday, while Bowie fell to Holliday in OT. A victory tonight would put the Lions right back in the playoff hunt!! Good luck Lions!!! Go skin the Jackrabbits!!!
